DANA BRINTZ | DRAWINGS | 15 JAN – FEB 2005 | PREVIEW 14 JAN | 6 - 9PM
The Agency is pleased to present a first solo exhibiton of drawings and sculptural objects by the young American artist Dana Brintz. Dana Brintz’ domain is drawing. She uses paint marker, inks and enamel on semi-transparent surfaces. Her work is as much inspired by modes of abstraction as it is influenced by graffiti.
In her large-scale drawings she has often expanded her work across the wall. Starting from a core of repetitive motifs her drawings have neither a beginning nor an end. They are obsessive continuations of the line. This is compounded by the fact that she draws on both sides of the transparent material, mostly acetate or vellum. The linear movements start out as fragile marks and become reinforced in parts forming thick painterly areas. The assertiveness of her markings is akin to automatic writing. Brintz does not exert control and yet she uses a rhythmical direction to form clear compositions. As some of her compositions are very large to the point of covering a whole wall they explode the edge of the drawing.
In search of further expansion of the medium she has moved to pouring layers of clear and dyed resin onto each other, filling each layer with drawings. This way she arrives at a progressive density, which becomes both a sculpture as well as an endlessly continuing three-dimensional drawing. Her approach to drawing and its forms draws on scientific processes but her starting point is the gesture in its purest form. Brintz confidently explores possibilities of spatiality in an otherwise two-dimensional medium. She continues to expand the boundaries of the medium with computer animation and video. The exhibition provides an overview of her work to date.
Brintz has studied art history at Princeton University and Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art, London.
